Heraldry is the knowledge and art of describing coats of arms, also referred to as achievements or armorial bearings. The visual system of heraldry as we know if originated from the need to identify combatants in the chaotic environment of the medieval battlefield. With knights usually totally encased in armour from head to toe, some colour, symbol or device became necessary to identify friend from foe.

From these origins, the visual devices of heraldry rapidly impacted on other art forms, and can be seen incorporated across just about every artistic pursuit of the period; painting, embroidery, stained glass, jewellery, architecture, leatherwork, dressmaking, woodwork, illuminations etc; the possibilities are endless!
