Poetry Self Hate

Hating Oneself Sonnet (III)

Stefano d'Urbino (August ASXXXIV)

  • I don't know where or when this all will end
  • I know only that I shall not want it to
  • The rebuke I give does in me offend
  • The hurting I cause you beats me black and blue

  • 'Tis by this mirror'd pain I know I love
  • For when I find you grieving so I too grieve
  • But why does loving cause such bitter tears
  • And flay my skin and soul and sweetest belief

  • In love and loving, life and living fine
  • Quiet discourse, sly laughter and happy smile
  • Work and exercise, slumber, dance and wine
  • Games and sports and sometimes, resting on the while

  • Yet as I wish our love blooms bold, my friend
  • I don't know where or when this all will end
